Bhutan Earthquake Sends Tremors Across Northeast India

Bhutan experienced a tremors of 5.6-5.8 magnitude affecting the entire State last night, 7 June 2026, and it was felt in Sikkim, North Bengal, Assam and other areas of North-East India. The tremor reportedly hit Punakha area, around 11:06 PM IST.

The earthquake struck at a depth of approximately 10 – 26 km, shaking was felt over a reasonably large area, according to seismic agencies. In urban areas like Siliguri, Gangtok, Guwahati, Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar, the residents said that the shaking was perceptible, as many temporarily evacuated their homes for safety reasons.

But there were no immediate reports of significant damage, injuries or losses in Bhutan or India, authorities said. The agencies in charge of disasters are still checking the area for potential aftershocks.

The accident happened in the Himalayan seismic zone, one of the most earthquake prone areas of the world. The region is seismically active due to the continued convergence of the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate that created the Himalayas and also generates earthquakes there today.
