India Pushes for Urgent UN Security Council Reforms at UN Meeting

India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni has once again called for a change in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) structure, saying the current setup does not reflect the geopolitical realities of the world today. The Indian mission to the UN expressed concerns about the efficacy of the UN Security Council, which was set up in 1945, in addressing the challenges of the 21st century, and said that further delay in the necessary changes will erode its credibility and effectiveness.

Ambassador Harish echoed India's long-standing call for enlargement of the permanent and non-permanent membership of the Security Council and that Asia, Africa and Latin America are under-represented in decision making process. He stressed that the reformed Security Council must be more representative, inclusive and effective in handling global crises and conflicts, in keeping with the realities of today.

The renewed push by India for the reform of the UNSC is happening in the wake of increased international support for changing the way the global institutions are run, so as to be more democratic and representative. As part of the G4 countries (India, Brazil, Germany and Japan), India remains committed to its quest to a Permanent seat on the Security Council, affirming the need for meaningful reform to make multilateralism more effective and enable the UN to better address current challenges faced by the world.
