Global South Rising: China Calls for Reform of International Institutions

China has again urged the world to rebuild world governance institutions to give developing nations, or what it calls ‘the Global South’, more representation at the United Nations. The existing international order, which was constructed post-World War II, is not suitable for the 21st century, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a high-level diplomatic gathering. China says emerging economies and developing countries should have more influence in the making of global decisions in security, trade and development.

The importance of the issue has grown due to the fact that a majority of the world's population and a rapidly growing portion of global economic growth are found in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, but are under-represented in the world's major international institutions. China has asserted that the world should be a more inclusive and equitable one, and that developing countries should be more represented in the United Nations and other international organizations. Beijing has also emphasized the importance of safeguarding the interests of developing countries related to climate change, debt relief and economic development.

Global South representation has emerged as the most important geopolitical issue of 2026. Many other countries, such as India, Brazil and some of the African states have called for reform of international institutions, especially the United Nations Security Council. The latest assault is emblematic of the rising influence of emerging countries, and of a greater demand for the current international system to be more representative and inclusive. The question is sure to be a major dilemma in international relations and global diplomacy for the years to come.
