E100 Fuel Gets Green Light in India: A Big Step Towards Energy Independence

India has officially introduced E100 grade fuel (100% ethanol) which will help to boost the use of cleaner and locally produced fuels. The government's decision to approve the rules for using vehicles on E100 fuel has allowed for the introduction of flex-fuel vehicles that can use ethanol blends from E20 to E100, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said. In the near future, several car manufacturers are projected to start offering ethanol-friendly automobiles.

Lower cost is one of the major benefits of using E100 fuel. E100 is likely to be priced at around ₹20 per litre less than petrol, which will make it a viable choice for both transport operators and consumers, the government said. The project is also targeting the dependence of India on imported crude oil, which is almost 85% of India's oil demand. The government is looking to boost ethanol consumption derived from sugarcane, maize and agricultural waste to lower its dependence on imported fuel and offer greater earning potential for farmers.

But E100 is not a direct substitute for petrol since petrol-powered vehicles will not be able to use ethanol fuel as their primary fuel and will need specially designed flex-fuel engines to do so. Ethanol also has a lower energy content, giving it slightly lower mileage than petrol. However, the approval of E100 fuel is being viewed as a significant step in the quest for energy independence, towards cleaner mobility and a robust biofuel economy for India. The plan could have positive impacts on consumers if it proves a success, reducing fuel prices and enhancing the country's energy security and rural livelihoods.
