44 viewsSleep has become one of the new “big three” in health—along with a healthy diet and exercise—just as vital. The latest studies indicate that sleeping between 7 and 9 hours a night is associated with improved heart health, boosted immunity, better memory and reduced obesity, diabetes and depression. With ever increasing workloads and screen time, sleep deprivation has become a top public health problem for many young people and professionals.
Having too much screen time before sleep is one of the major lifestyle problems in the present day. Blue light from screens decreases the production of melatonin, the hormone which helps control sleep, which makes it difficult to fall asleep and to sleep well. It is recommended that children watch no more than 30-60 minutes of screen time prior to going to bed, establish a routine, avoid caffeine before bedtime, and have a blackout room for sleep. Morning sun and regular exercise are also beneficial for keeping the body clock healthy.
Better sleep is one of the easiest and most effective strategies for better physical and mental health, according to experts. Good sleep hygiene takes a few minor daily changes and can yield lasting improvements, as opposed to costly health treatments. People who prioritize sleep will benefit with better concentration, enhanced productivity, better management of stress, and will lower the chances of chronic diseases. With an increasing awareness comes a new appreciation for the importance of sleep—a necessity and not a luxury—of a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
