PM Modi Launches ₹47,600 Crore Development Projects in Odisha

On 20 June 2026, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development initiatives worth over ₹ 47,600 crore in Rairangpur, Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. The event coincided with the completion of two years of the BJP government in Odisha and was a rare instance where the President and the Prime Minister attended a big development programme together. These projects cover a range of sectors such as energy, industrial infrastructure, roads, water and sanitation, healthcare, schools, tourism, and irrigation, all aimed at enhancing connectivity, boosting economic development and job creation throughout the State.

The big projects announced included the 600 MW Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project, the Stage-II expansion of IB Thermal Power Station (2×660 MW) and Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) project at Lakhanpur. It is hoped that the projects will help in deepening energy security, pave the way for clean utilization of the country's coal resources, boost industrial development and create thousands of direct and indirect employment in the state. On this visit, the Prime Minister also paid tribute to the family of President Murmu in her homeland village of Pahadpur and emphasized the Government's thrust on skill development, education and empowerment of tribes.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Modi hailed Odisha as an important state in the development of India, and reiterated the Centre's commitment to make the state a big industrial and infrastructure hub. The large investment package is likely to enhance public service delivery, bring in private investment and enhance the connectivity of the region while supporting the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. The projects also reflect the government's focus on inclusive growth, especially in tribal and rural areas, and is one of the biggest infrastructure investments of the year.
