81 viewsThe 11th International Day of Yoga was marked around the world, including in India, on 21 June 2026 with an event where millions of people worldwide participated in mass yoga sessions to promote physical fitness, mental health and a healthy lifestyle. Special yoga sessions were arranged by government institutions, schools, university clubs, etc. and even by the armed forces, as well as by community groups, demonstrating increasing acceptance of yoga as a comprehensive therapy around the world. India had proposed for the United Nations to declare 21 June as International Day of Yoga in 2014 and since then, it has become one of the biggest public health events in the world.
The theme for this year's celebration was focused on the benefits of yoga for stress reduction, flexibility, boosting immunity and mental well-being. Yoga practitioners said that daily yoga practice can help them control lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, hypertension and anxiety and also have effect on their posture, breathing and quality of life. Yoga practices such as Surya Namaskar, Pranayama, Tadasana, Bhujangasana and Vajrasana were demonstrated in public events to invite people of all ages to practice yoga as a daily routine.
International Yoga Day 2026 also reinforced India's cultural and diplomatic influence by showcasing yoga as a gift to the world. At the Indian embassies, cultural institutions and the local communities, there were celebrations across various countries to mark the universal appeal of Yoga which transcends religion, nationality and language. Yoga Day is a reminder that the practice of simple daily actions can play an important role in achieving a healthier lifestyle, a more balanced life and a more sustainable lifestyle, which are all becoming increasingly common around the world.
