Politics or Prime-Time Show?

Indian politics these days isn't a fight of ideas and more like a fight of viral clips. Each speech, debate, and rally is transformed into reels, memes and trending hashtags. Political leaders are becoming internet personalities instead of policymakers for many of the young people. But, is politics educating citizens or just entertaining them?

The Social Media Effect

The social platforms of Instagram, YouTube and X have transformed political communication. Nowadays, leaders are not just running to earn votes but views, likes and shares as well. The viral video clip is more likely to attract attention than a comprehensive policy announcement. Social media has democratized politics yet it's fueled sensationalism over substance.

My Point of View

Politics should be interesting but not popularity. Viral videos can be in the spotlight for a day, but they can't fix unemployment, inflation, education, or healthcare problems. Meanwhile, social media has given youth a platform to voice questions directly to leaders and hold them accountable. The issue is not tech, it's when image becomes a substitute for governance.

The Bigger Question

Democracy requires voters who can be informed, not entertained. The onus is not just on the politicians to be honest and transparent with them, but on the voters as well to not let trending clips get in the way while assessing leaders based on their efforts.
