91 viewsOn 22 June 2026, there was a massive fire in a three-storey commercial building located at Aliganj, Lucknow, where a coaching centre was operating. The building soon filled with thick smoke and students and staff became trapped inside. A number of pupils are said to have jumped off the building in a bid to get away while fire service personnel attempted a wide-ranging rescue.
At least 14 students were killed, most of them students, and several others injured, authorities have confirmed. Firefighters were able to break through the back wall of the building when smoke filled the front to save several people. Initial reports indicate it is likely a short circuit in the electrical system, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The tragedy has resulted in much mourning throughout the nation. PM Narendra Modi condoled the deaths and offered ₹2 lakh ex gratia to the families of the dead and ₹50,000 to the injured of the PMNRF. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the spot and observed the rescue movement and directed a high level inquiry into the incident. After the disaster, there are urgent concerns regarding the fire safety compliance in the coaching centres and commercial buildings in India.
