SpaceX's 'Starpipe': Why Elon Musk Wants a Dedicated Natural Gas Pipeline for Starship

The global space industry is undergoing a historic transformation, and SpaceX is leading the revolution. Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, the company has changed the economics of space exploration through reusable rockets, satellite internet, and ambitious plans to send humans to Mars.

SpaceX is proposing an 8 mile natural gas pipeline dubbed "Starpipe" to deliver fuel directly to its Starbase launch facility in Texas, as part of its long-term space exploration plans. The project will have to help the company's next-generation Starship rocket powered by liquid methane and liquid oxygen. Construction is set to start soon and the pipeline is slated to be operational by early 2027, according to documents filed with Texas regulators.

Today, about 630,000 gallons of liquid methane are needed for each Starship launch, and hundreds of tanker trucks bring the liquid methane to the launch site. The process is time-consuming, costly and not feasible for SpaceX's goal of launching dozens – eventually hundreds – of times per year. The construction of Starpipe is designed to develop a continuous fuel supply that will dramatically increase efficiency and lessen the logistical burdens.

The project also fits into the larger plans SpaceX has to take control of its supply chain. In addition to the pipeline, the company is reportedly considering natural gas extraction and will be constructing a facility at Starbase to liquify natural gas for use as the Raptor engines of Starship's fuel tanker require methane fuel. The vertical integration may help lower costs and facilitate more regular launches.

SpaceX's future plans involve further expansion of the Starlink satellite constellation, supporting NASA's Artemis lunar mission, and eventually transporting humans to Mars, with Starship playing a pivotal role in all these endeavors. With more launches, dependable fuel systems will be as crucial as the rockets. Advanced spacecraft are not the only key to the future of space exploration; so are energy systems to keep them aloft, as in the case of the proposed Starpipe pipeline.
