Modi's Historic Seychelles Visit: India's Strategic Answer to China's Growing Indo-Pacific Influence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Seychelles has emerged as a significant milestone in India's foreign policy, reinforcing New Delhi's commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). During the visit, Prime Minister Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Seychelles National Assembly, underscoring the growing diplomatic relationship between the two countries. He was also conferred "The Guardian of the Blue Horizon," Seychelles' highest civilian honour, in recognition of India's longstanding support for the island nation and its contribution to regional development and maritime security.

India and Seychelles signed several agreements covering maritime security, defence cooperation, digital connectivity, healthcare, education, capacity building, and sustainable development. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a free, open, secure, and rules-based Indo-Pacific, while also strengthening cooperation in tackling piracy, illegal fishing, terrorism, and climate-related challenges.

The visit carries broader geopolitical significance because the Indian Ocean has become a key strategic arena where India and China are expanding their influence. China's growing investments in ports, infrastructure, and maritime projects across the region have prompted India to deepen its engagement with friendly island nations under its "Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)" vision. Strengthening ties with Seychelles enhances India's ability to safeguard crucial sea lanes through which a significant portion of global trade and energy supplies pass.

Experts believe the visit reflects India's broader strategy of building trusted partnerships rather than military blocs.
