No Diesel, Just Water: Inside India's First Hydrogen Train Revolution

66 viewsIndia is on the edge of a major milestone in sustainable transportation with the successful high-speed trials of its first indigenously developed hydrogen-powered train. The train recently completed its last trial on the Jind – Sonipat route in Haryana at a maximum trial speed of 120 kmph. It should operate at a service speed of 75 km per hour and once commercial operations commence, the train will become India's first passenger train running on hydrogen fuel-cell technology.
The hydrogen train produces electricity by a chemical process between hydrogen and oxygen in a fuel cell, unlike traditional diesel trains. It is a zero tailpipe emission transport system with the only direct by-products being water vapour and heat. The 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion system on the 10-coach train is expected to give the train a range of approximately 250 kilometres on one fill. A special hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling station have also been built at Jind for the project.
It is designed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai under the ambit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and ‘green mobility’ initiatives in India. If the pilot project is successful, Indian Railways can roll out hydrogen-powered trains on other non-electrified routes all over the country.
The hydrogen train is more than just a mode of transportation, it is India's commitment to a future with cleaner solutions. It aligns with the nation's aspirations for a fossil-fuel-free future, reduced carbon emissions, and the development of a green hydrogen economy. India's initiative to explore hydrogen rail technology, along with Germany and Japan, signifies a crucial move toward modern, eco-friendly public transportation systems, solidifying its status as a leader in innovation and sustainable infrastructure.
