Meta's Gujarat Data Centre: How India's AI Infrastructure Is Entering a New Era

India's ambitions to become a global Artificial Intelligence (AI) powerhouse received a major boost as Meta announced plans to establish its first AI-enabled data centre in India through a partnership with Reliance Industries in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The first phase of the project will have a 168-megawatt (MW) capacity, with room for future expansion to support Meta's growing AI infrastructure.

The announcement comes as the Gujarat government unveiled a new Data Centre Policy, aiming to attract global technology companies with incentives such as capital subsidies, power concessions, tax benefits, and faster approvals. The state has set an ambitious target of building 7.5 GW of data centre capacity, while investment proposals worth nearly ₹8.5 lakh crore have already been expressed by companies including Meta, Reliance, Adani, Tata, CtrlS, and others.

Unlike traditional facilities, AI-enabled data centres are designed to power advanced applications such as generative AI, large language models, cloud computing, and machine learning. Meta says the Jamnagar facility will support its AI products while serving hundreds of millions of users across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp in India. The project will also be backed by renewable energy, reflecting the company's sustainability goals.

For India, the investment represents more than just another technology project. It is expected to generate skilled employment, strengthen cloud infrastructure, attract further foreign investment, and accelerate the country's AI ecosystem. Gujarat, particularly Jamnagar and Dholera, is rapidly emerging as a preferred destination for hyperscale data centres due to its power availability, infrastructure, and investor-friendly policies.

As AI becomes the foundation of the next digital revolution, Meta's investment signals growing confidence in India's technology ecosystem. If similar projects continue to arrive, the country could evolve from being one of the world's largest digital markets into one of its most important AI infrastructure hubs, shaping the future of innovation across Asia and beyond.
