India Pushes Ahead with 6G and Semiconductor Manufacturing: A New Era of Digital Self-Reliance

India is accelerating its ambitions to become a global technology powerhouse by investing heavily in 6G telecommunications and semiconductor manufacturing. During his address to the Indian community in Melbourne, Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India is rapidly working on "Made in India" 6G technology while building a manufacturing ecosystem "from chips to ships."

India is already one of the world's largest digital markets, with nationwide 5G expansion underway. The government's next goal is to ensure that the country is among the global leaders in developing 6G technology, which is expected to deliver ultra-fast connectivity, AI-powered networks, holographic communication, and advanced smart-city applications. Officials have also highlighted the creation of research centres and innovation ecosystems to prepare for the next generation of telecommunications.

At the same time, semiconductor manufacturing has become a national priority. Through the India Semiconductor Mission, the government has approved multiple chip manufacturing and packaging projects to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen India's electronics industry. The initiative aims to attract global investments while creating a complete semiconductor ecosystem, from chip design to fabrication and testing.

These efforts are closely linked to India's broader economic strategy. Advanced semiconductor production is essential for smartphones, electric vehicles, defence systems, artificial intelligence, medical equipment, and data centres. By expanding domestic chip production, India hopes to secure supply chains, generate high-skilled employment, and become a preferred manufacturing destination for global technology companies.

The government's vision extends beyond manufacturing. Investments in research, innovation, digital infrastructure, and international partnerships are intended to position India as a leader in emerging technologies over the coming decade. If these initiatives succeed, India could play a central role in shaping the future of global telecommunications and semiconductor production.
