Holiday Turns to Horror: Vietnam Boat Capsize Claims 15 Indian Lives

A sightseeing trip in southern Vietnam turned into a devastating tragedy after a speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized near Phu Quoc Island, leaving 15 Indian nationals dead and several others injured. The accident occurred just 400 metres from shore as the vessel was returning from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port.

According to Vietnamese authorities, the boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members when it overturned in rough sea conditions. Rescue teams, assisted by nearby boats, fishermen, the coast guard, and border forces, managed to rescue 21 people, while two survivors were reported to be in critical condition.

Many of the tourists were employees of Lava International on a company trip. Reports indicate that the victims were primarily from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. India's Embassy in Vietnam immediately activated emergency response centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to assist survivors and coordinate with local authorities and families.

Initial reports suggest that rough waves and bad weather may have contributed to the accident, although Vietnamese authorities are also investigating whether a mechanical malfunction played a role. Eyewitnesses said the captain instructed passengers to wear life jackets, but not everyone complied before the boat capsized. The exact cause remains under investigation.

The tragedy has shocked both India and Vietnam, highlighting the importance of maritime safety, emergency preparedness, and strict adherence to safety protocols during tourist excursions. Messages of condolence have poured in as rescue and investigation efforts continue.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder that even popular tourist destinations can become dangerous when weather conditions deteriorate rapidly. Authorities in both countries are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the accident to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
