53 viewsThe ongoing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar has become one of the country's most talked-about public movements, drawing thousands of young supporters, students, social activists, and public figures. The campaign, which began over concerns including alleged examination irregularities and demands for accountability, has gained nationwide attention following the participation of environmentalist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk.
Wangchuk is currently on the 17th day of an indefinite hunger strike. According to updates shared by organisers, he has lost around 8.5 kilograms, is experiencing muscle weakness and significant physical pain, but has chosen to continue the fast. Doctors and supporters have expressed concern over his deteriorating health, while several public figures have appealed to him to end the hunger strike to protect his well-being.
The movement has also attracted support from political leaders, student groups, and prominent personalities. More than 1,800 public figures have reportedly urged Wangchuk to end his fast while simultaneously calling on the government to engage in dialogue with the protesters. Actors including Zeenat Aman, Abhay Deol, and Naseeruddin Shah have also voiced support for peaceful discussions.
Meanwhile, the CJP has announced a "Chalo Sansad" march planned for 20 July, urging citizens to participate peacefully and press for their demands. Organisers say the protest is intended to remain non-violent and democratic, with the objective of drawing attention to issues affecting students and young people.
As the protest enters another critical phase, attention remains focused on two key questions: whether the government will open formal talks with the protesters and whether Sonam Wangchuk's health will allow him to continue his fast. The coming days are likely to determine both the future of the movement and the government's response.
