48 viewsEvery year, 18 July is celebrated as World Snake Day to spread awareness about snakes, their importance in nature, and the need to protect them. Although many people fear snakes, they are among the most beneficial creatures in the ecosystem.
There are over 4,000 species of snakes worldwide, while India is home to more than 300 species. Surprisingly, only around 60 species found in India are venomous, and most snakes are harmless to humans. The famous "Big Four" venomous snakes responsible for most snakebite cases in India are the Indian Cobra, Common Krait, Russell's Viper, and Saw-scaled Viper.
Snakes play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They naturally control populations of rats and other rodents, helping farmers protect crops and reducing the spread of diseases caused by pests. At the same time, snakes serve as food for birds of prey, mongooses, and other wildlife, making them an essential part of the food chain.
Despite their importance, snakes face threats from habitat destruction, road accidents, illegal wildlife trade, and human fear. Every year, many harmless snakes are killed simply because people mistake them for dangerous species.
India also records one of the highest numbers of snakebite cases in the world. Health experts advise that anyone bitten by a snake should remain calm, avoid traditional remedies or superstition, immobilize the affected limb, and seek immediate medical treatment, as anti-venom can save lives.
World Snake Day reminds us that snakes are not villains but valuable protectors of biodiversity. Respecting wildlife, protecting natural habitats, and spreading scientific awareness can help humans and snakes coexist peacefully while preserving nature for future generations.
