Delhi on High Alert: Section 163 BNSS Imposed Ahead of Parliament Session

Ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the Delhi administration has imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) across parts of the national capital to strengthen security and maintain public order. The provision replaces the former Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) under India's new criminal law framework.

Under Section 163 BNSS, the District Magistrate or other authorized officials can prohibit unlawful assemblies and impose temporary restrictions if there is a threat to public peace, public safety, or law and order. The move comes as authorities expect large gatherings, demonstrations, and increased security concerns during the Parliament session.

Delhi Police have increased deployment at key government buildings, Parliament, and other sensitive locations. Security personnel, surveillance systems, and vehicle checks have also been strengthened across the city. Officials have advised citizens to cooperate with security agencies and avoid violating the restrictions.

The government maintains that the decision is purely preventive and aimed at ensuring the smooth conduct of Parliament while protecting public safety. However, some opposition leaders and civil society groups have questioned the timing of the restrictions, arguing that such measures should not unnecessarily affect the democratic right to peaceful protest.

Authorities have clarified that the restrictions are temporary and will remain in force only for the notified period. Citizens are urged to follow official advisories and stay updated through government notifications while carrying out their daily activities.
