US–Iran Tensions Escalate: Is the Middle East Heading Towards a Wider War?

The Middle East remains on high alert as the conflict between the United States and Iran continues to intensify. On 21 July 2026, the U.S. military carried out another wave of airstrikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure, marking the tenth consecutive night of strikes aimed at reducing Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

The escalation follows recent Iranian missile and drone attacks on U.S. facilities in Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, which resulted in American casualties. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iran would "pay many times over" for every American soldier killed, signaling that Washington is prepared to continue military operations if attacks persist.
