India–Romania Relations Strengthened as President Murmu’s Visit Opens New Avenues for Cooperation

India and Romania have taken significant steps to deepen their bilateral relationship during President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit to Romania. The visit marked the first state visit by an Indian President to the country in more than three decades, giving fresh momentum to diplomatic ties that have existed for over seven decades.

During talks with Romanian President Nicușor Dan, both sides discussed cooperation across several important areas, including defence, science and technology, education, sports and economic partnerships. Three agreements were signed covering scientific and technological cooperation, the establishment of an Indian Studies Chair at the University of Bucharest, and collaboration in sports.

The two countries also discussed expanding opportunities for students, researchers and professionals. India will increase training opportunities for Romania under the ITEC programme, including courses in artificial intelligence. Cooperation in cyber diplomacy and technology education is also expected to grow.

Economic relations were another major focus. Speaking at the India–Romania Business Forum, President Murmu invited Romanian companies to participate in India’s growth story and highlighted opportunities for investment and technology collaboration.

The strengthening of India–Romania ties reflects India’s growing engagement with Europe. Both countries are now looking to build a broader partnership based on trade, technology, education, defence and people-to-people connections. With the two nations preparing to mark 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2028 as the “India–Romania Year of Innovation,” the partnership appears set to enter a new and more ambitious phase.
