Sarnath Becomes India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site

India has added another proud chapter to its rich cultural history as Sarnath, one of Buddhism’s holiest pilgrimage sites, has officially been inscribed as India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site. The announcement was made on 25 July 2026 during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.

Located about 10 kilometres from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is revered as the place where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon, known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya. This event marked the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha and the spread of Buddhism across Asia.

The site is home to several historically significant monuments, including the Dhamek Stupa, Chaukhandi Stupa, the ruins of ancient monasteries, the Ashoka Pillar, and the renowned Sarnath Archaeological Museum, which houses the iconic Lion Capital of Ashoka—India’s National Emblem.

UNESCO recognition is expected to boost global awareness of Sarnath’s cultural and spiritual significance while encouraging heritage conservation and sustainable tourism. The designation is also likely to increase international tourism, benefiting local businesses and creating new employment opportunities.

With Sarnath joining the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List, India continues to strengthen its position as one of the world’s richest repositories of history, culture and spirituality. The recognition not only celebrates India’s ancient Buddhist heritage but also reinforces the importance of preserving historic sites for future generations.
