Assam Floods: Death Toll Rises to 80 as State Shifts Focus to Rehabilitation

Assam continues to battle the devastating impact of severe floods, with the death toll rising to 80 as heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers wreak havoc across the state. According to the latest official updates, more than 2.12 lakh people remain affected across eight districts, while rescue and relief operations continue in the worst-hit areas.

The floods have submerged villages, damaged roads, bridges, and agricultural land, forcing thousands of families to seek shelter in relief camps. Emergency teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local authorities, are working around the clock to rescue stranded residents and distribute food, drinking water, medicines, and other essential supplies.

With floodwaters gradually receding in several regions, the Assam government has begun shifting its focus from immediate rescue efforts to rehabilitation and recovery. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a loan relief package, including a six-month loan moratorium for flood-affected borrowers, to help families and businesses rebuild their lives after the disaster.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in Assam and other northeastern states, raising concerns about renewed flooding, flash floods, and landslides. Authorities have urged people living in low-lying and vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official advisories.

The Assam floods once again highlight the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events and the growing challenges posed by climate change. While rescue teams continue their dedicated efforts, long-term investments in flood management, resilient infrastructure, and disaster preparedness will be essential to reduce future losses and protect the lives and livelihoods of millions of people across the state.
