Assam Floods 2026: Death Toll Reaches 82 as State Begins Rehabilitation Drive

The flood situation in Assam has shown signs of improvement, with water levels gradually receding across several districts. However, the disaster continues to leave a devastating impact on thousands of families. According to the latest official reports, the death toll has risen to 82, while nearly 1.78 lakh people remain affected across multiple flood-hit districts. Rescue teams and local authorities are continuing relief operations as many villages recover from days of inundation.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has begun visiting the worst-affected districts to review relief measures and assess rehabilitation efforts. The state government has shifted its focus from emergency rescue operations to restoring normal life by repairing damaged infrastructure, supporting displaced families, and helping farmers recover from crop losses. To provide immediate financial relief, the government has announced a waiver of July electricity bills (up to 300 units) for eligible flood-affected households and expanded assistance to thousands of affected families.

Despite the improving situation, large areas of agricultural land, roads, and public infrastructure remain damaged. Many families are still living in relief camps, while officials continue distributing food, drinking water, medicines, and other essential supplies. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as weather conditions could change with further rainfall.

The Assam floods once again highlight the need for stronger flood management systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, and effective disaster preparedness. While the immediate crisis is easing, long-term rehabilitation and sustainable flood mitigation will be essential to protect lives and livelihoods in one of India's most flood-prone states.
