India Hosts BRICS National Statistical Offices Meeting in Lucknow

India, as the BRICS Chair for 2026, hosted the Meeting of the Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of BRICS countries in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on 3 August 2026. The meeting brought together senior statistical officials from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and the newer BRICS members to strengthen cooperation in official statistics and data-driven policymaking.

The discussions focused on improving the quality, reliability, and comparability of official statistics across BRICS nations. Delegates exchanged best practices on the use of modern technologies, digital data collection, artificial intelligence, and big data to enhance statistical systems. They also explored ways to strengthen cooperation in areas such as sustainable development indicators, economic statistics, demographic data, and social sector monitoring.

A key objective of the meeting was to promote greater collaboration among BRICS countries in developing harmonised statistical standards. Reliable and timely data plays a crucial role in designing effective public policies, monitoring economic performance, and tracking progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

India highlighted its achievements in digital governance and statistical modernisation, including the growing use of technology in census operations, surveys, and public data management. The meeting also reinforced BRICS' commitment to sharing knowledge, building institutional capacity, and supporting innovation in official statistics.

Hosting the NSOs Meeting reflects India's increasing leadership role within BRICS and its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation. As global economies become increasingly data-driven, collaboration among BRICS countries in statistical systems will help improve evidence-based policymaking, enhance transparency, and contribute to inclusive and sustainable development across member nations.
