Arvind Kejriwal's March to PM Residence Over E20 Fuel Policy Sparks Political Debate

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal led a protest march towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence on 4 August 2026, opposing the Centre's implementation of the E20 fuel policy. However, the march was stopped by Delhi Police on Firoz Shah Road before it could reach the Prime Minister's residence.

The protest centred on the rollout of E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. Kejriwal argued that consumers should be given the freedom to choose between pure petrol and E20 fuel at fuel stations instead of facing what he described as a forced transition. He also submitted a petition carrying around 2.5 lakh signatures, requesting a meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss public concerns over the policy.

AAP has raised concerns that the widespread use of E20 fuel could affect older vehicles, reduce fuel efficiency, and increase maintenance costs. The party has demanded that the government clearly communicate the long-term impact of ethanol-blended fuel and ensure that consumers have informed choices. On the other hand, the Central Government maintains that ethanol blending is a key part of India's strategy to reduce crude oil imports, support sugarcane farmers, lower carbon emissions, and improve energy security.

The protest has intensified the political debate over India's energy transition. While the government views ethanol blending as an important environmental and economic reform, the opposition is calling for greater transparency, wider public consultation, and consumer choice before the policy is implemented nationwide.
