Assam Flood Crisis: 97 Dead, 1.68 Lakh Affected

Assam continues to battle a severe flood crisis, with the death toll rising to 98 and around 1.55 lakh people affected across 13 districts, according to the latest reports. Although floodwaters are beginning to recede in several areas, thousands of families remain dependent on relief and government assistance.

The floods have disrupted daily life, damaging homes, roads, railway infrastructure and agricultural land. Several communities have faced difficulties accessing essential services, while transportation has also been affected in flood-hit areas.

Authorities are now gradually shifting their focus from emergency rescue operations towards damage assessment, rehabilitation and restoration. A major door-to-door survey is scheduled to begin on August 9 to identify affected households and assess losses more accurately.

The Assam government is also using digital technology to improve the assessment of flood damage and ensure that relief and compensation reach eligible families more efficiently.

The crisis highlights Assam's continuing vulnerability to recurring floods, particularly during the monsoon season. Beyond immediate relief, experts and residents have repeatedly called for stronger embankments, improved drainage, better flood forecasting and long-term disaster-management measures.

While the reduction in the number of affected districts offers some hope, the recovery process will be lengthy. For thousands of families, the priority now is rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods and returning to normal life.
