186 viewsIndia is rapidly emerging as a major destination for artificial intelligence infrastructure, but a massive project in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is raising an important question: can India's AI ambitions grow without putting additional pressure on scarce natural resources?
Google has committed around $15 billion over five years (2026–2030) to build an AI hub in Visakhapatnam, including a gigawatt-scale data-centre campus. The project is being developed with partners including AdaniConneX and is designed to provide large-scale computing capacity for AI and cloud services.
The Water Question
The project has attracted protests and legal challenges from environmental activists who are concerned about its potential impact on local water resources and nearby wildlife. Reuters reports that Visakhapatnam is already facing a daily water shortfall of around 70 million litres, intensifying concerns about how additional industrial demand could affect residents.
The environmental debate is particularly significant because data centres require substantial cooling infrastructure. Google says it plans to use advanced air-cooling technology to reduce environmental impact and has rejected claims that residential or rural drinking-water supplies will be diverted.
AI Growth vs Sustainability
The project could bring major economic benefits. Government estimates have highlighted thousands of direct jobs and significant economic activity, while the broader project is expected to strengthen India's AI and cloud ecosystem.
However, India's AI expansion will need more than computing power. Water-efficient cooling, renewable energy, transparent water-use reporting and careful site selection will be crucial.
The Visakhapatnam debate therefore represents a much larger question: Can India become an AI powerhouse while ensuring that technological progress does not come at the cost of water security and the environment?
