Jharkhand Students March Towards Assembly Over Recruitment Exam Irregularities

Thousands of students and government-job aspirants marched towards the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly in Ranchi on August 10, escalating a protest over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). The agitation began on July 25 and entered its 17th day on Monday.

What Are Students Demanding?

The protesters are demanding comprehensive reforms in the state's recruitment system, cancellation of several disputed examinations and an independent investigation into alleged paper leaks and other irregularities. A key demand is a CBI investigation, while some protesters have also proposed an inquiry by retired High Court judges from outside Jharkhand.

The protesters specifically want several examinations cancelled, including the 14th JPSC Civil Services Examination. They say the government's response so far has not addressed their main concerns.

Government's Response

The Jharkhand government has held several rounds of talks with the protesters and says it has accepted around 98% of their demands. However, student leaders dispute this figure, saying the government has agreed to cancel only three of the 13 examinations they want scrapped. The disagreement over the remaining demands has kept the protest going.

Security Tightened in Ranchi

Authorities imposed prohibitory orders around the Assembly and deployed more than 1,500 security personnel, including Rapid Action Force, Indian Reserve Battalion, district police and Quick Reaction Teams. The security deployment covered a route of approximately 4 kilometres.

As protesters crossed barricades while carrying the Tricolour and raising slogans, the situation escalated near Jagannathpur Temple. Police used water cannons, tear gas and batons to disperse sections of the crowd. Police said they used limited force after some protesters became aggressive.

Major Development: Former JPSC Chief Arrested

The protest also coincided with a major development in the investigation. Jharkhand CID arrested L. Khiangte, former JPSC chairperson, over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. According to Hindustan Times, the total number of CID arrests in the case has reached 20. All three JPSC members had also resigned amid the continuing controversy.

The Jharkhand movement reflects a broader concern among young Indians about government recruitment, examination transparency, unemployment and accountability. For thousands of aspirants, competitive examinations represent years of preparation and a major opportunity for stable employment.

The immediate question is whether the government and protesters can reach an agreement on the remaining demands—particularly the proposed independent probe and cancellation of disputed examinations—without further escalation.
