The Future of Indian Jobs: Will AI Create More Jobs Than It Destroys?

249 viewsArtificial intelligence is rapidly changing India's job market. From banking and IT to customer service and manufacturing, companies are using AI to automate repetitive tasks, improve productivity and reduce costs. This has created fears that millions of workers could eventually be replaced.
However, the picture is more complicated than simply “AI taking jobs.”
The World Economic Forum expects India to see strong growth in roles such as AI and machine-learning specialists, big-data specialists and cybersecurity professionals by 2030. Indian companies are also increasingly looking beyond traditional degrees and focusing on skills when hiring.
At the same time, some existing jobs are already being affected. Indian banks, for example, are increasing automation in areas such as fraud detection, data analysis and customer interactions. Employee numbers at some major private banks fell by up to 4% in the year to March 2026.
Globally, the WEF estimates that 170 million jobs could be created and 92 million displaced by 2030, resulting in a net gain of 78 million jobs. But this transition will require massive reskilling.
For India, the biggest challenge may therefore not be whether AI creates or destroys more jobs, but whether workers can transition quickly enough. NASSCOM's FutureSkills initiative already focuses on AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, big data and other emerging skills.
AI may not eliminate work—it may eliminate some tasks and transform entire professions. India's future workforce will increasingly belong to people who can work with AI rather than compete against it.
