Jharkhand Student Protest: CM Soren Cancels 14th JPSC Exam — Will the Agitation Finally End?

The Jharkhand student recruitment-exam protest has reached a major turning point, but the agitation is not over yet. On August 12, 2026, Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced in the Jharkhand Assembly that the 14th JPSC Civil Services Examination would be cancelled. The government also announced the cancellation of two other JPSC examinations and ordered an investigation into examinations conducted by TDPL.

The announcement comes after weeks of protests by JPSC and JSSC aspirants, who have alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and demanded greater transparency. Earlier, the government had agreed to cancel the 14th JPSC preliminary examination and two backlog examinations following talks with student representatives. However, students continued their agitation because several key demands remained unresolved.

A major sticking point is the students’ demand for a CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities. Protesters have also demanded action concerning the JSSC-CGL examination and broader reforms in the state's recruitment system.

The protest intensified on August 10, when students marched towards the Jharkhand Assembly. Police used water cannons during the confrontation after protesters attempted to cross barricades.

Despite the government's latest announcement, students have continued protesting. On August 11, aspirants organised a silent procession in Ranchi, showing that cancellation of the exams alone has not resolved their concerns.

The Jharkhand controversy has now become a larger debate over examination transparency, youth employment and trust in recruitment institutions. The coming days will determine whether further government action can bring the prolonged student movement to an end.
