BRICS Ocean & Polar Science Meeting: Why India’s Goa Meeting Matters?

The 8th BRICS Working Group on Oceanic and Polar Science and Technology is being held in Goa from August 12–14, 2026, putting marine and polar research at the centre of international scientific cooperation.

The BRICS working group aims to promote collaboration among member countries through joint research, technology development, scientific exchanges and training in ocean and polar sciences.

The meeting is particularly important as oceans and polar regions are facing growing pressure from climate change, pollution, rising temperatures and ecosystem degradation. Better scientific observation and data-sharing can help countries understand these changes and improve climate forecasting and disaster preparedness.

For India, the meeting also strengthens its role in marine research and polar science. India has been actively involved in international polar research and has used BRICS cooperation to exchange scientific expertise and resources.

Another important area is the development of joint marine expeditions and advanced technologies, which could improve understanding of deep oceans, coastal ecosystems and changing polar environments. The BRICS framework also encourages cooperation between governments, universities, research institutions and industry.

The Goa meeting therefore goes beyond diplomacy. It highlights how scientific cooperation can become a tool for tackling climate change, protecting marine ecosystems and preparing countries for future environmental challenges.
