India–Bangladesh Reset: Can Tarique Rahman’s India Visit Repair Bilateral Ties?

India and Bangladesh may be heading towards an important diplomatic reset as Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is in discussions with New Delhi over a possible visit to India. The visit is reportedly being considered for August 20–25, although the exact dates have not yet been finalised.

The proposed visit comes at a sensitive time for bilateral relations. Ties between the two neighbours have faced tensions in recent years, particularly following the political changes in Bangladesh and disagreements surrounding former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India. Dhaka continues to press New Delhi on her extradition, making the issue one of the most difficult points in the relationship.

At the same time, both countries have strong practical reasons to improve relations. Trade, energy cooperation, border management, connectivity and water-sharing are important areas where India and Bangladesh need continued dialogue. The Ganges water-sharing arrangement and the long-pending Teesta issue could also feature in broader discussions.

However, the diplomatic thaw is far from guaranteed. On August 16, Bangladesh indicated that it wants a “conducive environment” before Tarique Rahman makes the trip, suggesting that important differences remain unresolved.

If the visit takes place, it could become a crucial opportunity for New Delhi and Dhaka to move beyond recent tensions and establish a more pragmatic relationship.

The real test will be whether both sides can convert diplomatic gestures into concrete progress on difficult bilateral issues.
