Jharkhand Student Protest: India’s Growing Recruitment Exam Crisis

The student movement in Jharkhand has entered its 23rd consecutive day, with job aspirants continuing their agitation over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

The protest began on July 25 and intensified after thousands of students gathered in Ranchi. On August 10, a march towards the state Assembly escalated into clashes with police, who used tear gas, water cannons and batons to disperse protesters. Police and protesters were reported injured, while an FIR was registered against around 600 people following the confrontation.

Students are demanding the cancellation of examinations they consider compromised, greater transparency in recruitment and an independent investigation, including a CBI probe or an inquiry by retired judges from outside Jharkhand. They argue that irregularities in recruitment examinations threaten the future of thousands of young people competing for limited government jobs.

The agitation has now taken a more confrontational turn. After holding a Tiranga Yatra in Ranchi on August 15, student leaders announced plans to burn effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi across the state's 24 districts. They have also announced a gherao of the Chief Minister's residence on August 20 if their demands are not addressed.

Meanwhile, Soren has said that recruitment irregularities will be investigated impartially and that those found guilty will face legal action.

The Jharkhand agitation reflects a wider concern among India's youth: when recruitment examinations become uncertain, students lose not only an examination opportunity but trust in the entire employment system.
