NASA’s Moon Base Invitation: A New Era for India’s Space Ambitions?

India’s space programme could be entering a new phase after NASA invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to participate in its Moon Base programme under the Artemis Accords. The invitation was discussed during the ninth meeting of the India–US Civil Space Joint Working Group, held at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru on August 5–6, 2026.

NASA’s Moon Base programme aims to move lunar exploration beyond short visits towards a long-term human presence on the Moon. NASA plans to develop the base in stages, beginning with robotic missions and technology demonstrations before gradually establishing power, communications, transportation and habitation systems near the lunar South Pole.

For India, the opportunity could be strategically significant. ISRO has already demonstrated its lunar capabilities through the Chandrayaan missions, while India is developing its human-spaceflight programme through Gaganyaan. Participation in a major international lunar infrastructure project could give Indian scientists, engineers and space companies valuable experience in advanced lunar technologies.

The potential cooperation could also strengthen India–US space diplomacy, particularly in areas such as scientific data sharing, human spaceflight, robotics and deep-space exploration. India joined the Artemis Accords in 2023, creating an existing framework for cooperation in peaceful lunar exploration.

However, the exact nature of India’s participation has not yet been publicly detailed. Whether ISRO contributes scientific instruments, robotics, communications technology, logistics capabilities or other infrastructure will determine the real significance of the invitation.

If the partnership develops, India could move from being primarily a lunar explorer to becoming a contributor to humanity’s long-term presence beyond Earth—a major step in the country’s space ambitions.
