Airtel Recharge Gets Costlier: Why Indian Mobile Users Are Paying More?

70 viewsAirtel users are facing a significant change in prepaid recharge options after the telecom operator discontinued four popular plans — ₹299, ₹579, ₹619 and ₹649 — from August 12, 2026. The ₹299 plan was particularly popular among budget-conscious users because it offered 1.5GB of daily data, unlimited calls and 28 days of validity.
With the ₹299 option removed, ₹349 has become the entry-level 28-day daily-data plan, offering 2GB data per day. Airtel has also increased the price of its 84-day ₹859 plan to ₹899, reducing the availability of lower-cost long-term options.
Although Airtel has not announced this as a conventional across-the-board tariff hike, the impact on consumers is similar. Analysts estimate that the restructuring could effectively increase tariffs by around 3–4%, while some users moving from the discontinued ₹299 plan to the ₹349 alternative face a substantially higher monthly cost.
The move reflects a larger transformation in India’s telecom industry. Operators are under pressure to increase Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) while investing heavily in 5G networks and maintaining financial sustainability. Airtel has previously argued that healthier ARPU levels are necessary for a financially sustainable telecom sector.
But for ordinary users, particularly students and low-income consumers, even a ₹50 monthly increase matters. Mobile connectivity is no longer a luxury—it is essential for education, digital payments, employment and communication.
Airtel’s latest restructuring therefore raises a broader question: As India becomes increasingly digital, should basic mobile connectivity become more expensive?
