India–Bangladesh Reset: Is Sheikh Hasina Still Blocking Tarique Rahman’s Delhi Visit?

India and Bangladesh appear to be standing at a delicate diplomatic crossroads. Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to New Delhi was expected to become an important opportunity to repair relations between the two neighbours. However, the trip remains uncertain, with Dhaka saying that no final decision has yet been made.

At the centre of the diplomatic tension is Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since leaving Bangladesh after the political upheaval of 2024. Dhaka has repeatedly requested her extradition, while India has said that the request is being examined through its legal framework.

Bangladesh has indicated that a more favourable diplomatic environment is necessary before Rahman makes the journey. Dhaka has also objected strongly to Hasina's public interaction in New Delhi earlier this month, arguing that it complicated the atmosphere surrounding the proposed visit.

The timing makes the situation particularly important. India and Bangladesh share vital interests in trade, border security, river-water management, connectivity and regional stability. A prolonged diplomatic freeze could affect cooperation on all these fronts.

At the same time, New Delhi must balance its relationship with Bangladesh against the sensitive legal and political questions surrounding Hasina.

Interestingly, reports have suggested that Rahman could visit India between August 23 and 25, but Dhaka has not officially confirmed the trip. An Indian statement related to preparations for the visit was also withdrawn shortly after being issued, adding further uncertainty.

The real question is therefore not simply whether Sheikh Hasina is “blocking” the visit. It is whether India and Bangladesh can prevent one deeply contentious issue from holding an entire bilateral relationship hostage.

For New Delhi and Dhaka, the coming days could determine whether the relationship moves toward reconciliation—or another period of diplomatic mistrust.
