India–Bangladesh Border: Is Social Media Turning a Border Dispute Into a Nationalist Battle?

The India–Bangladesh border is increasingly becoming more than a physical frontier—it is becoming a digital battlefield. Videos of confrontations involving the BSF and Bangladesh’s BGB are rapidly spreading across social media, often accompanied by nationalist commentary, accusations and calls for retaliation. Analysts have warned that social media is intensifying tensions by turning sensitive border incidents into viral spectacles.

The danger is not only emotional rhetoric but misinformation. In recent months, old or unrelated videos have repeatedly been presented as evidence of fresh clashes or migrant movements. One viral video falsely claimed that Chinese troops had entered Arunachal Pradesh, when it actually showed a BSF-BGB confrontation on the India–Bangladesh border.

Such misinformation can quickly transform a local incident into a nationalistic confrontation. Every video becomes a question of “India versus Bangladesh,” while humanitarian concerns and facts can disappear beneath online outrage.

Both countries have legitimate security and border-management concerns. But when algorithms reward anger over accuracy, social media can make diplomacy harder.

The real challenge is therefore not simply securing the border—it is securing the truth surrounding the border. In an increasingly polarised digital environment, one misleading video can travel faster than diplomacy and potentially turn neighbours into enemies.
