Are Rahul Gandhi’s Protests Becoming Congress’s New Political Weapon?

Rahul Gandhi’s recent protests suggest that the Congress is increasingly taking its political battle beyond Parliament and onto the streets. His latest six-hour dharna outside Delhi’s Parliament Street Police Station over alleged pellet-gun injuries to student protester Sahil Lochab has intensified the debate over whether street mobilisation is becoming a central strategy for the Opposition.

The immediate issue was accountability. Gandhi demanded an FIR after Lochab alleged that he was injured by pellets during a July 20 student protest. The Delhi Police subsequently registered an FIR, after which Gandhi ended his sit-in. Congress described the development as a step towards justice.

But the BJP sees a different picture. Its leaders have accused Gandhi of using protests for political publicity and attempting to divert attention from other controversies, including the ongoing Vande Mataram dispute.

This raises a larger political question: is protest becoming Congress's most effective weapon against the government?

For the Opposition, street protests can keep public attention focused on issues that may otherwise disappear from political debate. But repeated confrontations also risk allowing the government to portray Congress as disruptive rather than constructive.

Ultimately, the success of Gandhi’s protest politics will depend not on the size of the crowds or the television headlines, but on whether these campaigns produce sustained accountability and measurable political gains.
