National Space Day 2026: Celebrating India’s Historic Lunar Achievement

India celebrates National Space Day on 23 August every year to commemorate one of the country's greatest achievements in space exploration—the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon on 23 August 2023.

The historic landing marked a major milestone for India’s space programme. With Chandrayaan-3, India became the first country to successfully land near the lunar south-polar region and the fourth country to achieve a soft landing on the Moon.

The mission demonstrated India’s growing technological capabilities and the remarkable achievements of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The Vikram lander successfully touched down, while the Pragyan rover conducted experiments and collected valuable scientific data from the lunar surface.

National Space Day is not simply a celebration of a successful mission. It also highlights the importance of scientific research, innovation, education and the growing role of young Indians in space technology.
