AI vs Yogi: Has Indian Politics Entered the Era of Deepfake Elections?

Uttar Pradesh's political battle has entered a new and potentially dangerous arena: AI-generated videos. With the 2027 Assembly election approaching, a fresh BJP–Samajwadi Party clash has erupted over an AI-generated video featuring Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Akhilesh Yadav displayed an AI video at a press conference, while the BJP accused the Samajwadi Party of insulting Hindu traditions and the image of the Chief Minister. The SP, however, has denied creating the video and says Yadav merely shared material he received from another source.

The controversy exposes a frightening possibility: what happens when voters can no longer trust what they see? AI can create convincing voices, faces and political scenes that never actually happened. India has already experienced political misinformation involving manipulated and AI-generated content, making the technology particularly sensitive during elections.

But blaming AI alone would be too convenient. Political parties and their supporters decide how these tools are used. If one side uses AI to ridicule or attack its opponent, and the other responds with its own digital propaganda, elections could become a competition in who creates the most emotionally powerful fake—not who presents the strongest facts.

The bigger question is therefore not whether AI will enter Indian politics—it already has. The question is whether India's political system can control its misuse before the 2027 election becomes an AI-powered misinformation battlefield. Parties need transparency, platforms need rapid fact-checking, and voters need to verify sensational videos before sharing them. Otherwise, tomorrow's political weapon may not be a speech or poster—it could be a completely fictional video that millions believe is real.
