7.8% GDP Growth: Is Modi Misguiding People With Selective Data?

108 viewsPrime Minister Narendra Modi has highlighted India’s 7.8% real GDP growth for April–June 2026 as evidence of strong economic performance. The number is officially reported by the government and is higher than the RBI’s earlier 7% forecast. Modi has used the figure to project confidence in India’s economic strength. But the controversy surrounding how the number is calculated raises an uncomfortable question: are people being shown the complete economic picture?
Former Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg has questioned the underlying numbers, pointing to a significant revision in the previous year’s GDP estimate. His calculations produced a much lower growth figure when comparing the unrevised previous estimate with the latest current-price GDP. The government, however, rejects this argument, saying it mixes the old and new GDP series and therefore creates a misleading comparison.
The bigger issue is not whether Modi personally created the 7.8% figure—he did not. The issue is how political leaders present economic statistics. Celebrating the highest headline number while giving less attention to methodology, revisions, employment, household incomes and living costs can leave ordinary citizens with an incomplete picture.
If the government believes 7.8% accurately represents India’s economic growth, it should explain the methodology clearly and openly. Economic achievements deserve celebration, but economic data deserve scrutiny too. Otherwise, is the government informing people—or simply giving them the most favourable number?
