Trump–Xi–Putin Together: Is a New World Order Taking Shape?

The possibility of Donald Trump, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin sitting at the same table has suddenly become a major geopolitical talking point. Russia said on September 6 that it has not ruled out a trilateral meeting, potentially around the November APEC summit in Shenzhen, China. Kremlin officials say the idea would require agreement on an agenda and meaningful outcomes before preparations begin.

If such a meeting happens, it would be symbolically powerful. The United States, China and Russia are three of the world's most influential military and economic powers, yet their relationships are marked by intense competition. A direct conversation between their leaders could potentially address issues ranging from the Ukraine war and global trade to strategic stability and energy security. It could also show that global diplomacy is becoming less dependent on traditional Western alliances.

But calling it a “new world order” would be premature. Trump and Xi still face major disagreements over trade, technology and strategic influence, while Washington and Moscow remain divided over Ukraine. Even Russia's latest statement makes clear that the meeting is still conditional and that its agenda has not been settled.

The bigger question is whether this would create genuine cooperation or simply become a high-profile diplomatic photo opportunity. If the three leaders can negotiate on major conflicts and economic issues, it could signal a more multipolar world. If they cannot overcome their competing interests, the meeting may only highlight how divided the global system has become.
