₹22,000 Crore Debt vs ₹6.5 Crore Repayment: Did Subhash Chandra Get a Massive Loan Relief?

44 viewsA massive controversy has erupted around the insolvency case of Essel Group founder Subhash Chandra, after admitted creditor claims of around ₹22,006.57 crore were contrasted with a proposed repayment of just ₹6.25 crore, plus ₹25 lakh towards insolvency-process costs. On the face of it, the difference is enormous, raising questions about how lenders could recover such a small amount.
However, the ₹22,000 crore figure does not mean Chandra personally borrowed ₹22,000 crore. Much of the amount relates to loans taken by companies associated with the Essel Group, for which Chandra had provided personal guarantees. Chandra has also disputed the perception that the entire amount represents his personal borrowing.
The controversy intensified because several lenders opposed the repayment plan. While creditors representing a majority of voting share supported it, dissenting lenders questioned the extremely low recovery.
Importantly, this is not a final ₹22,000-crore loan waiver. On September 1, the NCLT’s five-member special bench stayed the earlier approval and barred Chandra from transferring or selling his properties while the matter is reconsidered.
The case therefore raises a wider question: when huge corporate liabilities collapse into tiny personal repayments, who ultimately bears the cost—the borrower, banks, or the public financial system?
