A strange incident at an ashram school in Gujarat’s Narmada district has gone viral after 11 children were seen crying, shaking and swaying one after another. The incident took place on September 9 at Moskut Ashramshala in Dediapada. Videos of the episode quickly circulated on social media, triggering speculation among locals that the children were “possessed” by a spirit or local deity.

The situation initially raised concerns about food poisoning or a medical emergency. The children were taken to Dediapada government hospital and later to Rajpipla Civil Hospital for further examination. However, medical assessments reportedly found no signs of food poisoning or a serious physical illness. Health officials also said the children were medically healthy after examination.

Health officials have suggested that the incident could involve group behaviour, imitation or mass psychogenic illness—a phenomenon in which physical or behavioural symptoms can spread among people in a group without an identifiable physical disease. The fact that the children began displaying similar behaviour one after another has strengthened this line of inquiry.
