Rahul Gandhi’s Indore Event Triggers BJP–Congress Row

A political controversy erupted after a comedian mimicked Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Congress leader and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi’s “Chhatron Ki Goonj” student interaction programme in Indore on September 19. A video of the stage performance was shared by the Congress and subsequently drew criticism from BJP leaders.

During the act, comedian Pulkit Mani imitated Modi’s speaking style and references to his interactions with foreign leaders. The performance also included a reference to Modi’s late mother. Gandhi was present on stage and participated in the exchange, which became the central point of the political dispute.

The BJP accused Gandhi and Congress of crossing political boundaries, with several BJP leaders arguing that references involving Modi’s late mother were inappropriate. BJP spokespersons and ministers publicly criticised the episode and demanded that Congress address the controversy. These are BJP's stated criticisms rather than an independently established finding about Gandhi's intent.

The controversy came amid broader tensions surrounding the Indore event. Before the programme, posters carrying “Jhooth Ki Goonj” appeared across the city. Congress alleged that the BJP was attempting to obstruct the event, while BJP representatives said the posters reflected students' opposition to the programme. Police also imposed 31 security conditions, citing security concerns and precedents related to the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

The episode has therefore turned a student-focused political programme into another public dispute between the BJP and Congress over political satire, personal references and standards of political discourse.
