Saudi–Houthi Conflict: Why Is Yemen’s War Escalating Again?

Fighting between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement has sharply intensified after several years of relative calm. On September 19, Saudi authorities said they intercepted a ballistic missile launched toward Riyadh, the first reported Houthi attack targeting the Saudi capital since the latest escalation began. No casualties or damage were reported by Saudi authorities.

The escalation is part of a wider breakdown in the Yemen conflict. The Houthis, who control Sana’a and much of northern Yemen, have resumed attacks against Saudi territory and energy-related sites, while Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces have intensified operations against Houthi positions. The Houthis have also sought greater leverage around the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a strategically important route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

The conflict had largely quieted after a 2022 UN-brokered truce, but tensions began increasing again in 2026. Analysts cited by the Institute for the Study of War say the Houthis are seeking economic and political concessions, including changes to restrictions affecting Houthi-controlled ports and airports.

The latest developments have raised concerns beyond Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The United States has warned that the confrontation could escalate rapidly, while international concern is growing over potential disruption to Red Sea shipping and regional energy supplies.
