UFO Over Tehran? What Do the Viral Videos Actually Show?

Videos showing a mysterious, brightly lit object over Tehran, Iran, have gone viral on social media, triggering speculation that the footage could show a UFO, drone, aircraft or something else. The clips reportedly surfaced around September 20, with some posts claiming the sighting was near Tehran’s Azadegan Expressway.

The footage shows several multi-coloured lights moving or apparently hovering in the night sky. But there is an important limitation: the available videos do not establish the object's exact size, altitude, distance or speed. Iranian authorities have also not publicly identified the object or confirmed that it represented any threat.

That has opened the door to several theories. Some social-media users believe the lights could be military drones or multiple drones flying together. Others have suggested an ordinary aircraft, while another theory is an LED-equipped kite or similar object. None of these explanations has been independently confirmed.

The timing has made the story even more dramatic. The videos appeared amid heightened Iran-US tensions, while the latest sighting also came close to the 50th anniversary of a famous 1976 Tehran aerial incident. Declassified US records confirm that the 1976 sighting was investigated, but there is no evidence connecting it to the current videos.

For now, the safest conclusion is simple: the videos show unidentified lights, not confirmed extraterrestrial technology. Until original footage, location data or an official identification becomes available, the “UFO” label remains speculation.
