48 viewsThe political controversy surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is taking a new turn, with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) announcing plans for a nationwide protest if Kumar does not resign.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said the organisation has given Kumar a deadline to step down. If the demand is not met, CJP plans to begin its nationwide agitation from Mumbai on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, before taking the protest to other cities across India.
The announcement follows CJP’s earlier warning of a “Jantar Mantar 2.0”, referring to its previous prolonged protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The organisation has accused the Election Commission of undermining voters’ rights and has demanded changes to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. These are CJP’s allegations and demands, not established judicial findings.
The controversy comes amid wider scrutiny of the Election Commission. An Indian Express investigation reported that two Election Commissioners had raised objections on multiple occasions concerning aspects of electoral-roll management. The Election Commission has disputed the implications of those reports and maintained that final decisions were unanimous.
With October 2 approaching, the question is whether this deadline will remain a political warning or become the beginning of a nationwide street campaign.
One thing is clear: the debate over electoral transparency is moving from newsrooms and political statements onto the streets.
