27 viewsIndia remembers Lal Bahadur Shastri on his birth anniversary, celebrated every year on October 2. Born in 1904, Shastri became India’s second Prime Minister and is remembered for his simple lifestyle, humility and commitment to the nation.
Shastri became Prime Minister in 1964, during a period when India faced serious economic and security challenges. His leadership during the 1965 India-Pakistan War strengthened his image as a leader who stood firmly behind the country’s armed forces.
One of his most enduring contributions was the slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”—a call recognising the importance of both soldiers defending the nation and farmers feeding it. The phrase continues to hold significance in India’s public life.
Shastri also encouraged citizens to support efforts to deal with food shortages and promoted greater agricultural production. His tenure was relatively short, but his public image remained closely associated with integrity, discipline and simplicity.
He died in Tashkent on January 11, 1966, shortly after signing the Tashkent Declaration with Pakistan.
On his birth anniversary, Shastri’s legacy is remembered not only through his famous slogan but also through the values of service, responsibility and dedication to the nation.
