Google Finally Lets Users Change Their Gmail ID — But There’s a Catch

74 viewsFor years, a Gmail address was almost permanent. Once users created an account, they generally had to live with an old, embarrassing or unprofessional username—or create an entirely new Google account. That has now changed for eligible users. Google officially says some users can change their Google Account email address from one @gmail.com address to another while keeping the same account and its existing data.
The process is relatively simple. Users need to open Google Account → Personal info → Email → Google Account email and check whether the “Change Google Account email” option is available. If it appears, they can choose an available new Gmail address. However, the feature is not necessarily available on every account yet, so users should not assume that everyone can immediately make the change.
There are also important restrictions. Google says a new @gmail.com address can be created for the account only once every 12 months and up to three times in total. The previous Gmail address remains associated with the account as an alternate address, and emails sent to both addresses continue reaching the same inbox.
The update could be particularly useful for people who created Gmail accounts as teenagers and now want a more professional identity. But it is not simply a username-edit button: users should check compatibility with services such as Sign in with Google before making the switch.
